Navratri 2016: Auspicious timings and other rituals

Navratri festival begins from today (October 1st) and is celebrated till October 11th. Nine different forms of Devi's are worshipped on this nine day festival. The 10th day of the festival is referred as Vijayadashami or Dussehra and after 20 days of this festival, Diwali is celebrated.

It is widely believed that, devotees who worship the Goddess and observe rigorous fast during those nine days, would be blessed with good health, prosperity.

Eating yummy delicacies, playing Garba Raas and Dandiya are a part of Navratri celebrations. People clean and decorate their houses before Navratri. Devotees worship Goddess Durga, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi. 

Starting with Puja of Shailputri Maa and Goddess of Navadurga, Navratri ends on a good note with Siddhidatri Mata’s puja. 

History says that Lord Shiva granted his wife Goddess Durga to meet her mother for just 9 days. During that time, Goddess Durga demolished demon Mahishasura. Hence Goddess Durga aka Kaali is represented as a symbol of shakti - the ultimate strength. It is also said that Maa Durga has eternal divine power, which can never be created nor destroyed.

Ghatasthapana is the first day of Navratri festival which is considered as the main ritual, symbolizing the commencement of the occasion. Placing Goddess picture in a pot, the devotees cover it with cow dung and seeds must be sown in the dung. Further the seeds sprout and are then distributed as Prasad on the Vijayadashami day.
