Lok Sabha today was informed that, the Centre do not have any plans of imposing ban on the liquor consumption.

Banning the liquor is one major proposal, that has been in the news, since ages, but no government really imposes it for one open reason (Liquor being one of the major revenue sources of the government).

But who is worried about the damage caused due to it to the normal people lives. Between 2012-2014, 2927 people had died due to consuming illicit liquor. Reacting to it, Minister of state for home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, said that, the central government can help states but it has no plans so far for a national level prohibition on liquor.

In 2014, 2.83 crore litres of liquor was seized under the Excise Act, which also included over 91 lakh litres of country made liquor. Adding to it, 1.15 crore litres of factory-made and over 76 lakh litres of "other" liquor was seized in the same year.

Till June this year, various enforcement agencies had seized 1366.35 kg of amphetamine, 6.51 kg of cocaine, 44,811.82 kg of ephedrine, 38,418.89 kg of ganja, 1,144.12 kg of hashish, 351.12 kg of heroin, 16.57 kg of ketamine, 663.15 kg of opium, 205150 bottles of cough syrup phensidyle, 12,903.41 kg of poppy husk, 34,018.34 kg of poppy straw and 43.74 kg of pseudo-ephedrine.

A few opined that, preventing the fake liquor is almost impossible, as the scandal is being run on a wide scale and needless to say, these liquors are killing thousands every year. So, the possible step Central government can take is, to ban the liquor completely and support the states in revenue terms.

However, this step would result in huge criticism from the liquor dealers around the country, but the normal public and especially women, would react positively. So, it would be better if the Centre makes appropriate measures towards liquor, so that issue does not take the worse turns anymore.
