Rating: 4/5

Story:

Mahavir Singh Phoghat (Aamir Khan), a National level wrestling champ gives up his sporting dream to earn livelihood for his family. He aims to make his son achieve a gold medal for India. But shockingly, his wife (Sakshi Tanwar) gives bith to four daughters. Heartbroken by it, Mahvir gives up on his dream too.

One fine day, Mahavir receives complaints that his daughters- Geeta (Zaira Wasim) and Babita (Suhabi Bhatnagar) were involved in a fight with the local lads. He then realizes that his daughters are no less than men and starts training them for wrestling.

What was the kind of support, daughters gave Mahavir and did he fulfill his dream from his daughters or not? Watch the film to know the answers to these questions.

Analysis:

Nitesh Tiwari is successful in molding a sports drama to an emotional one. The first half is almost flawless. Tiwari narrates the struggle of the young Geeta and Babita, in giving up all the fun in their teenage years, only to be trained as wrestlers.

The father-daughter relationships between Geeta and Mahavir and Babita and Mahavir are explored extremely well emotionally. Also, how situations change the ties between the two sisters has been tapped into well.

Coming to the second half, it is more cinematic. Geeta gets busy in playing the tournaments, but this time without her father being the coach. The freedom she experiences staying away from the family and all those emotions in that period are captured perfectly.

Performance:

Mahavir is not that Aamir Khan, Bollywood knew all these years. He was completely into the character and gave his best, with the least concern towards his stardom. He should be appreciated for letting the story and the girls in the film take the center stage.

Sakshi Tanwar as Mahavir’s wife came out with some extraordinary performance and is a perfect choice for the role. Zaira Wasim as Geeta is absolutely stunning. She pulls off the wrestling bits too with great effort and looks highly convincing. Suhani Bhatnagar, the young Babita too does an equally good job.

Pritam’s music blends with the mood of the film. Especially the title track boosts good  energy. DOP, Sethu Sriram captures the Haryanvi milieu quite perfectly. Editing is perfect and so are the dialogues. Nitesh Tiwari narrated the scenes filling it with good laughs and also emotions at the right times.

Finally:

Watching Dangal would be a perfect goodbye to 2016. It’s even a good ending to Bollywood this year, with a blockbuster like this.
