Rating: 2.5/5

Story:

Mirzya is divided into 2 eras. It shows the love story of star crossed lovers Mirza Sahiban.

Suchitra (Saiyami Kher) and Monish (Harshvardhan Kapoor), in the contemporary times, are childhood friends until a gruesome crime tears them apart. Years later, Suchi returns to India for her engagement to a royal prince, Karan (Anuj Choudhary), only to fall in love and rekindle her friendship with the stable boy, Adil who is actually Monish.

How the horrific past impacted Suchi and Monish's love? What is the legend of Mirza-Sahiban all about? The answers for these questions forms the rest of Mirzya.

Analysis:

As its Gulzar who wrote the screenplay, the expectations from Mirzya are high. The film communicates more in the verses narrated and songs than in casual dialogue. The lyrical narrative would make one tough to understand the story.

Adding to it, the folk tale makes sense, but the modern day take seems too archaic. The proceedings of the first half are damn slow. Though there are breathtaking visuals, the advancement in the story is nil, which thus makes the audience sound low.

Performance:

Harshvardhan Kapoor does not get much to show off his acting chops. Saiyami Kher on the other side is luminous. But the challenge of showing acting levels without much dialogues was not handled well by both the lead actors.

The cinematography is on the top notch. Low profile music, strong  plot and Gulzar's dialogues are the major plus points. Mehra proves to be a true storyteller and his inspiration from Greek tragedy is quite evident.

Finally:

Mirzya thrills visually, and the film is poetic. Go for it, if you are ok with something that is far from the reality.
