Jallikattu, the traditional game of Tamilians in Tamil Nadu, has been banned last year,  alleging that the sport is harming innocent bulls.

The Supreme Court’s judgment has allegedly disturbed the sentiments of many and several criticisms were raised by the biggies of Tamil Nadu. Adding to the chorus, even superstar Kamal Haasan today said that, if Jallikattu is banned, even Biryani should be banned. He opined that, Jallikattu will not harm any bull, instead if any bull gets hurt in the sport, it would be declared as a foul.

Reportedly, over 5000 Jallikattu supporters gathered at Chennai’s Marina beach, seeking permission for holding Jallikattu. Unable to tackle the demand from the officials and the public, Chief Minister Panneerselvam has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an ordinance to resume Jallikattu on Pongal this year.

“Given that Pongal festival, which holds great importance to the people of Tamil Nadu, is less than a week away and Jallikattu is an integral part of the Pongal festivities, considering the urgency of the issue, Government of India should consider promulgating an ordinance removing the legal impediments, enabling the conduct of Jallikattu during Pongal, 2017,” he said in the letter.

As it’s a traditional sport, if Panneerselvam succeeds in getting the approval for Jallukattu, it would be his first and also big success as Chief Minister and could thus be used for his political mileage in the future.
