2 years of SHE teams, big drop in crimes

‘SHE teams’ is one among the various successful projects, Telangana government took up to eradicate the crimes against women. A woman is free to call to the phone numbers provided, when she observes some a male harassing a female in any public place. The SHE team would attend the calls and take action against the male, rushing to the spot in minutes.

It’s two years with today, the SHE teams concept has been introduced and the latest statistics prove that, it is being carried forward successfully. According to the official statistics, over the last 2 years, crimes against the women have dropped by 20%, with 1,296 cases registered this year, compared to 1,521 cases of harassment last year.

Every SHE team comprises of 5 undercover women police personnel, who have been provided with cameras to record acts of harassment in public. The teams have also been tasked with dealing with online harassment of women and cyber bullying.

"Close to 40% of the people caught were from the 18-20 age bracket, while 25% were from the 20-40 age bracket. Minors constituted 23% of the people caught. We also found people older than 55 harassing women," Swati Lakra, additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes), Hyderabad and head of the SHE teams, told the media at a news conference.

Minors caught in the such cases are mostly from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds and were counselled along with their parents before they were let off. They were even asked to report back to the police occasionally.

“As far as the nature of the crimes is concerned, stalking cases, both physical and virtual were reported, along with phone harassment and eve-teasing cases. Inappropriate touching, taking photos without a girl's knowledge near bus stops, colleges, etc. were also reported with high frequency,” Lakra added.

According to a survey, 76% of the people in Hyderabad knew about SHE teams. This widespread knowledge was acting as a deterrent for men. To promote it even more, now the police officials have decided to hide the names of those, who lodged the complaints. 

Women safety is the one big requirement, every state government should have a special concern for. When compared to the several other states like Delhi, Haryana etc, the number of eve teasing cases and other type of harassment cases are less in Hyderabad and needless to say, SHE teams deserves this credit completely.
