Poonamben Madam, BJP MP from Jamnagar, Gujarat, was injured, after falling into an 8 foot-deep drain, while meeting slum dwellers during a demolition drive by civic authorities.
Reportedly, the BJP leader fell into the drain, when a thin concrete crust covering it cracked under her feet, while she was meeting people.
The 42 year old parliamentarian was later rushed to a private hospital, where the doctors said she was out of danger. But, as a precautionary measure, she was even taken to Mumbai for further treatment.
Speaking about the condition of Madam, Dr Dinkar Savariya, Gokul Hospital said, "she received five stitches on her head where she had sustained the 4-inch gash, but her condition is out of danger. We felt she required to be taken to a Mumbai hospital as a precautionary measure.”
“She hurt her left shoulder, but has not sustained a fracture. All in all, her condition is stable, her vitals are normal, and she is conscious and there is nothing to worry about,” another doctor at the hospital, S. Maheshwari, earlier said.
Jalaram slum locality residents were opposing the demolition drive and Madam had gone to the spot to resolve the issue and had entered into the altercation with the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) employees.
Joining the nearby Lakhoti lake, the drain mostly remains dry during Summer.
