The World’s longest hunger striker Irom Sharmila (44) is all set to step into the politics launching her own political party, “People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance” (PRJA). She will be contesting in the Assembly polls in Manipur in 2017. 

Sharmila made the announcement at the Imphal Press club, and said that she would contest  from two constituencies- Thoubal and Khurai. While Khurai is her home constituency, Thoubal is Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s constituency. PRJA includes a number of activists and entrepreneurs. Academician Erendro Leichombam is the convenor of the party for which Sharmila will be the co-convenor. 

Demanding the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Sharmila was on fast for about 16 years and withdrew recently, announcing her decision to test the political waters. Imphal court acquitted Sharmila on October 5th, under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (attempt to suicide).  

On October 18th 1948, the first session of Manipur Assembly was held. Now on the same day, Sharmila announced her political party, and has acquired significance.
