Increasing the maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks, a bill has been passed in the Rajya Sabha today through the voice vote. Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya moved for consideration and passage, the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Speaking after the bill passage, Dattatreya said, “The very purpose of this Bill is to increase the working women force because in the work force, participation of women is decreasing day by day.” He further added that, the law will be applicable to all the establishments employing 10 or more persons.
After Canada with 50 weeks maternity leave and Norway with 44 weeks, India now stands in the 3rd position.
