Few crores of cash was stolen from the parcel van of the Salem Chennai Express.
The parcels containing soiled currency notes were being brought to the Chennai by RBI. Reportedly, the thieves had drilled a two feet hole and entered into the parcel van. The issue was out after the workers entered one of the Railway parcel vans that were shunted into the parcel siding at Chennai Egmore railway station.
According to sources, the rake of Salem-Chennai Express (No.11604) had 19 coaches including 3 parcel vans in which an estimated Rs. 325 crore was being transported in 225 wooden boxes. Sources said the thieves had taken cash from 3 boxes.
When the train reached Egmore, the officials took the rake to the yard and parcel van coaches were brought to the parcel siding, which is near the vehicle parking lot. The policemen who were on escort duty, stationed in the coach next to the parcel van.
