‘Iron Lady’ of Manipur, Irom Chanu Sharmila will be breaking her 16 year old fast tomorrow morning at a local court.

Irom, who took the fast, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), has been forced by her brother Irom Singhajit, who had fed Sharmila through a nasal tube since 2000, to keep her alive at a prison turned hospital. 

Sharmila announced her decision to give off fast on July 26th and enter into politics to ensure AFSPA is repealed through political means.

Singhajit said that he is unaware of his sister’s future plans, but said that he would always be ready to welcome her to the family, if she is willing to. He further expressed his willingness to meet her and discuss about the future strategies.

An Assam Rifles battalion, on November 2, 2000, had allegedly killed 10 civilians near Imphal. After 3 days of the issue, Sharmila embarked on her fast AFSPA’s revocation, which allows the security men to even kill a person on suspicion without the fear of facing a trial in court.
