West Bengal to chop off ‘West’
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Banerjee has taken out a proposal of calling the state West Bengal as just ‘Bengal’ when it is in English and ‘Bangla’ or ‘Banga’ in Bengali.
After West Bengal assembly ratifies the proposal, it will be forwarded to the Centre. As the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has a majority in the assembly, the state assembly is very likely to ratify this proposal.
In the British period, the Bengal was partitioned as Hindu dominated West Bengal and Muslim dominated East Bengal. But the latter is now called as Bangladesh after it won independence from Pakistan in 1972. So the West Bengal government now felt that there is no need of tagging it as West, as there is not East.
