Polio virus threatens Telangana
After an active strain of wild polio virus (P2 strain) was detected in a water sample collected from a drain, the Telangana government has declared a global emergency ordering two lakh vaccines from Geneva.
"The government has decided to conduct a special campaign against polio in Hyderabad and parts of Ranga Reddy from June 20 to June 26," said Rajeshwar Tiwari, prinicipal secretary, health.
For the past five years, Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) strain has not been identified in the country, but as it is prevalent in the neighboring countries and West Asia, the doctors opined to take preventive measures. Regarding this, the state government will launch a massive vaccination programme soon.
