The Director General of Prisons V K Singh said that, they were aiming to make the jails financially self-sufficient and not depend on the government funds in the next 10 years.

Mr. Singh said that the Jails departments are running petrol bunks and ‘My Nation Stores’ to make prisons self-sufficient as well as to provide employment to the released prisoners. He opined that, the prisons should work as reform and social service centres.

He also added that the officials are planning to set up Ayurvedic villages with the help of voluntary organizations to provide employment to the released prisoners. The Prisons Department is mainly focusing on building a crime-free society through various initiatives, he said.

“Proposals have been sent to the State government for allocation of 40 acre of land to the Prisons Department at the new district headquarters and also for filling of vacant posts,” he said.
