Turmeric, which is touted to have the best medical ingredients, is identified as unhealthy, according to the latest studies.
Termed as the “Queen of Spices”, turmeric has been extensively used as the best remedy for cold, cough, wounds and several other skin infections. Especially, in India, turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb.
Several studies in the past, have shown that turmeric has therapeutic properties- from boosting immunity to being anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. But the latest researchers debunked all these claims and opined that, it has no therapeutic benefits.
They further added that, the main compound in Turmeric is curcumin and its an “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound and, therefore, a highly improbable lead (for drug development)”.
A medicinal chemist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the lead author on the study, Michael Walters, PhD, said, “Curcumin is a cautionary tale.”
However, not blaming the earlier researchers, Guido Pauli, PhD, a researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said that, turmeric contains several other complex chemical compounds that are worthy of additional research.
