In a stampede took place at a jetty at Kachuberia in West Bengal, 6 Gangasagar pilgrims, including a woman died, on Sunday. According to the district officials, two pilgrims lost their lives on the spot and others, including the women in the hospital. Reportedly, 10 people were injured in the incident.
The officials said that, the stampede occurred at around 6 pm, when there was a huge rush of pilgrims to board vessels to reach Kolkatta. All of them are middle aged and are yet to be identified, the officials added.
Meanwhile, Naval divers have also launched a search in Buriganga river, to find out if anybody might have fallen into it. West Bengal Public Health Engineering and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee said that, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, a total of 16 lakh pilgrims took their holy dip in two days.
