Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that, in the ongoing winter session of the State Legislature, the Telangana government will introduce a bill to facilitate 12% reservation for the tribal people in the state.  

Telangana Chief Minister KCR had promised to raise the reservation for the tribals from the existing 6% to 12% during the 2014 elections and is now keeping up his promise, Harish Rao said. Through the household survey, the state government conducted earlier, the ST population was identified to be over 36 lakhs, registering an increase from 6% to 9% of the total population.

The Chellappa Commission, considering the opinion of Tribal leaders and stakeholders, had also recommended the hike in reservation, in its report. The increase in reservation is expected to enhance education, employment and political opportunities for the so far alienated tribal families in the State.
