Hawk Eye, a mobile app launched by the Hyderabad police, was awarded the gold at the 20th National E-Governance Conference.
The app that was launched 3.5 years ago, has now got about 3.5 lakh users. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahendar Reddy opined that, the app was developed to transform the police. It empowered people to become police without uniform.
The app users can send a message or photo or video clip of any irregularity or crime taking place and the central server would download it. As the data sent is geo-tagged, the message is immediately sent to the nearest police station or patrol on real time basis for immediate action.
What made App stand out is the police would report back to the sender, on the action taken and the sender's identity was kept anonymous, Reddy said.
Adding to it, there is an SOS system where a person in distress could alert the police just by the click of a button.
