Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation through its Managing Trustee, filed a petition seeking Bharat Ratna for the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa. But the Madras High Court dismissed it, saying that, the court does not want to interfere in such matters.

The petitioner said that he approached the court as the Centre did not reply to the representation he made on December 15, 2016. The petition consisted of the entire life history of Jayalalithaa, including her 3 decades of film career. Pointing out that Jayalalithaa was a five-time CM, he submitted that her primary effort during her political life was to solve the problems of the poor.

Adding to it, the petition also stated the several welfare schemes introduced by Jayalalithaa’s government like Amma canteens, free laptops, and cycles to the students, etc. “For these social welfare measures, she was called ‘Amma’,” the petitioner reasoned.
