Telangana Chief Minister KCR was earlier keen to take-over Nizam's Sugar Factory, that was privatized in 2000 by the then TDP government and closed last year citing losses.
Citing its historical significance, KCR had earlier promised to take over. He opined that instead of its present status as a private partner in a joint venture, it should be made to run on its own for the benefit of sugarcane farmers.
But he now stated that he is not willing to take over the factory. “NSF is a closed chapter now. We will not take it over. Farmers are not willing to run the factory by forming a cooperative society along the lines of the cooperative societies in Maharashtra. The government too cannot run the factory as it is not financially viable,” KCR said.
Pointing out at Jana Reddy, who raised criticisms for not taking over sugar factory, KCR further said, "The situation has changed during the last 15 years. Several sugarcane farmers have opted for other crops. There is not enough sugarcane production here. Otherwise, we can make NSF financially viable even now."
