According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), there are a staggering number of about 95,000 unauthorized sewerage connections in Greater Hyderabad and its outskirts.
Most of these unauthorized connections belong to the restaurants, hostels, hotels, private hospitals, multiplexes, slums, theatres, households and function halls who let out the sewage and waste into sewers maintained by the sewerage board.
The HMWS&SB normally collects about 35% of the charges levied for water supplied as sewerage cess. There are about 8.50 lakh tap connections in GHMC limits. All the 95000 establishments which have unauthorized sewerage connections stay away from using board’s water tap connection but use its sewer network and do not pay any cess to it.
Adding to it, all these establishments, for their daily water needs, depend on the board or private water tankers, but their sewage is handled by the board. These premises generate huge volume of sewage which ultimately enters the board's drainage system. Area up to 80 sq. mt. will not be charged anything, but above that, i.e., areas between 81 and 200 sq.mt have to pay Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per month. The maximum charges go up to Rs. 10,000 and above for hotels and guest houses depending on the number of rooms, HMWS&SB officials said.
