According to the Indian Meteorological Department, very severe cyclonic storm 'Vardah' is on its way to making landfall close to Chennai by today afternoon.

"The very severe cyclonic storm Vardah now lies at 220km east-northeast off Chennai. It likely to cross close to Chennai by Monday afternoon," the latest bulletin said. 

Chennai and nearby areas have been receiving rain since last night. The Tamil Nadu government's municipal administration and water supply department, requested Chennaiites to stay indoors and come out only if it is absolutely necessary. 

Speculating the unfortunate incidents, the government declared holiday to all the schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts and coastal taluks of Villupuram district.

Anna University has postponed all exams that were to be held on Monday and Tuesday, only to reschedule later. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into sea as wind speed might touch 100 kmph.
