Hyderabad motorists are coming up with smarter ideas to evade apprehension.

In order to pass the information about the drunk and drive checks around the city, some youngsters created a Whatsapp group and updating about it, to help their friends.

Despite the traffic police putting huge efforts to create awareness among the public regarding the ill-effects of drunken driving, it hasn’t been effective enough in curbing the number of cases of DUI (Driving Under Influence).

Since January this year, Hyderabad traffic police caught over 14140 persons, among which 6,278 persons were jailed. The maximum punishment announced by the courts so far was 20 days, for three motorists, who were caught repeatedly during drunken driving checks.

Recently, one of the members of such whatsapp groups was caught in Banjara hills. “Such WhatsApp groups are on a rise in the city. There have been instances where people have been caught by the police asking about the sudden change of places to check. This gave us a hint, that people are resorting to smarter ways,”  a traffic police officer said.  

Banjara Hills ACP (Traffic) SK Masoom Basha said, “We got a tip-off about such social media groups some time ago. Since then, we have been shifting the check-points randomly. Meanwhile, we are also adopting smarter ways to curb the menace of drunken driving.”
