The Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College in Kerala has banned MBBS students from wearing jeans, tees and leggings and has made it mandatory for them to don white overcoats with prominent ID cards inside the campus.
Clarifying on the issue, the medical college authorities said the dress code was only to protect students when they tour the wards - girl students from sundry bystanders-turned-oglers and both genders from viruses of all kinds supposedly waiting to hop off infected patients.
Female students wear only saree or churidar and are restricted from letting their hair down but even from any coiffure other than the chaste bun. As for ornaments, nothing flashy will be allowed. Male students have been similarly corseted - only formal dress with shoes is permissible.
"The dress code is not a new one, but over the years students have not been following it. Now we have decided to make it compulsory following recent incidents in the hospital," said Dr Thomas Mathew, principal, medical college.
