The Telangana government has instructed Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to not draw water from Singur and Manjeera reservoirs as they got dried up in November last year and drinking water supplies to core areas of the twin cities, surrounding municipalities and enroutes villages were stopped completely. 

As an alternative, government is considering to draw water from Yellampally through a four stage pumping and so is speeding up the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project.

The Water Board, as per the 7 TMC allocation from these two reservoirs, draws 120 Million Gallons of water per day- 75 from Singur reservoir and 45 from Manjeera. As the Godavari project is incomplete, the Water Board is presently drawing 85 MGD.

Singur's present capacity is 18.500 TMC against 2.401 last year and its storage capacity is 29.937 TMC. Manjeera on the other side has 0.750 TMC of the total 1.500 TMC. Last year it was 0.330 TMC. These reservoirs are likely to receive more inflows due to rains in the catchment areas.

“The pumping and other machinery cannot be put idle for long and may get spoiled and defunct. They need to be put into use regularly to maintain them. Already the machinery has been in idle condition for over nine months,” a Water Board official said.  

Currently, the Water Board, to draw water from Godavari to Hyderabad, is using a four stage pumping. On the contrary, To draw water from Singur, one stage pumping will be sufficient. If at all the state government allows HMWS&SB to draw at least 50% of allocated water (7 TMC) from Singur and Manjeera, that would benefit the board as money would be saved towards power charges.
