Lack of institutional support, number of power looms, are making the weavers in Telangana, commit suicide.
In Nalgonda district alone, where at least 30000 people are dependent on weaving, 18 weavers have committed suicide in the past two years. Even the weavers situation is worst in Karimnagar, Medak and Mahbubnagar too.
During the 2014 elections, Telangana CM KCR had made several promises to the weavers like creation of a welfare fund and constitution of a handloom weavers’ welfare society on the lines of APCO.
But the situations later took a different turn, where the government could not turn up for the handlooms industry much. It would be better if the government at least now, does some introspection.
