Not only restricting themselves for the purpose they are appointed for, the teachers in the government colleges have redefined their roles for the benefit of students.

Several government colleges are providing meals to the students free of cost, even before the initiative from the state government. The local political representatives are contributing from their pockets to make the service go uninterrupted. This led to the increase in the attendance of the students, the reports say.

A few of the colleges like Government Junior College Godavarikhani have been serving meals to students from last one year. G Madhavi, Principal of the college shared that the colleges gives white rice, one curry, and dal on a daily basis.

“RTC Chairman S Satyanarayana had donated vessels that are required for cooking and local representatives provided us with rice and dal. At the launch of the meal scheme, I ahd contributed Rs 20,000. Even now, the cooking expenses to the tune of Rs 5, 000 are borne by the college,” she said.

Not just providing the meals, college managements are ensuring that students stay back for the study hours so as to improve the results. “Providing meal has improved the attendance and also results in the college. Last year, the pass percentage was 86 per cent as against 52 per cent in 2014-16,” Madhavi said.

Meanwhile, in the recent times, Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari had said that the state government was planning to introduce mid-day meal scheme which would benefit 1,73,296 students. But the government degree colleges are demanding the government to provide complete meals, so that would yield better results.
